10/28/20 - Staff Education on Weight Stimga
AFS Discover • 54m
Weight-based stigmatization is prevalent in the United States, manifesting in mistreatment across employment, healthcare, education, and interpersonal settings. Unlike other stigmatized populations,
obese individuals do not receive in-group protection (from laws such as the American's with Disabilities Act). Overweight individuals face negative stereotyping from other thin and overweight individuals alike. Overweight individuals, therefore, experience pervasive and unique stigma that effects their lives in many negative ways. The AFS fitness team discusses this topic with registered dieticians Bella Diaz, RDN and weight stigma expert Laura Griffin, RDN.
